When Charles Dekeukeleire makes Combat de boxe (Boxing Match), he is 22 years old and obsessed with cinema. He immediately aligns himself with the defenders of pure cinema, Germaine Dulac, Jean Epstein, Marcel L’Herbier, Louis Delluc. He also admires Vertov and his conception of the Kino-Glaz, the cameraeye.
A poem by Paul Werrie served as starting point for this film which is based on a high-speed montage, close-ups, superimpositions, the successive use of the negative and positive image and the principle of rhythm. The violence of the fight, the presence of the audience, the tension between the crowd and the ring are swept up in a dazzling choreographic montage. —cinematek.be

Charles Dekeukeleire è cineasta e teorico del cinema belga, e uno dei suoi pionieri. Egli trova in autori quali Germaine Dulac, Jean Epstein, Dziga Vertov, Man Ray, Fernand Léger e Marcel Duchamp, i riferimenti artistici e stilistici attraverso cui distillare il suo cinema.Tra il 1927 e il 29 realizza tre film sperimentali.
Il primo è Combat de boxe, un corto di nemmeno 8 minuti ispirato a un poema di Paul Werrie. Per questo film Dekeukeleire recluta due pugili professionisti, tra cui il campione Belga dei pesi piuma. L’uso della sovrapposizione dei negativi, l’alternanza dei piani narrativi del pubblico e dei pugili, rispettivamente rappresentati in negativo e positivo, e lo strettissimo montaggio delle sequenze di boxe, ossessivamente reiterate e concertate in modo plastico e ritmico, rendono questo film uno dei più minuziosamente costruiti degli anni ’20.
Attraverso le pellicole successive Dekeukeleire si imporrà come caposcuola di un documentarismo in bilico tra lirismo e sperimentazione

For his first film, Combat de Boxe, produced in 1927, Dekeukeleire staged a boxing match in his room based on a poem by Paul Werrie. Dekeukeleire recruited two professional boxers, one of which was the Belgian lightweight boxing champion. The abrupt changes of scale, the use of overprinting, and the use of very short shots alternating between the spectators and the fighters made this film unusually complex for the Twenties.
